Club Championship

Club Champion: Pam Lacko

The Club Championship is held annually by GHGC, typically in the spring, for both Women and Men. It is a 2 day (36-hole) stroke play event. The
contestants who play from the Championship Tees (Blue for Men and Green for Women) and shoot the lowest combined 36-hole gross score are the Champions. In the event of a tie, a playoff is held immediately following the completion of the second round. In addition to prizes, the Club Champions receive a reserved parking space for the year (or until the next Champions are crowned)

To promote more play, there is also a Net Stableford event played simultaneously. Players can compete in both events but if a player does not complete a hole, they are disqualified from the Championship competition and are only eligible for Stableford.

Women may elect to play from the Red tees but there must be at least four players from the Red tees to have a separate flight.

There is also a 9-Hole Women’s Division played from the Red tees using the front and/or back nine holes, one nine on each day. Players in this division compete for Low Gross or Stableford.

An awards luncheon is held following the conclusion of the event. Prizes are awarded to the Champion and Runner-Up and the top point winners in the Stableford competition.

Women’s Member Member

The Grand Haven Women’s Member Member tournament is an annual club event open to all women members under the guidance of the Grand Haven Competition Committee.  A separate Member Member sub-committee comprised of the year’s previous winners, club staff, and other members decide the format, rules, tees, and social activities each year.

The tournament is typically played over a 3-day period and includes an ice breaker/pairings party the evening before the event. During the ice breaker, players will be told which flight they are in and who they will be playing. Players will have the opportunity to buy their respective teams for a cash side pool.

The Member Member format is typically a 4-ball match play competition within flights, consisting of five 9- hole matches. Flights are determined by the total handicap index of each team.

Each match is scored by the low net ball of each team: 1 point for a win, ½ point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss. Handicap strokes are allocated based on the low handicap player in each match. The total points in each match equal 9. Teams accumulate points for each match during the event and the team with the highest points within a flight is the Flight Winner. The Flight Winners advance to a shoot-out to determine the Overall Winners.

An invitation is sent out from the Club several weeks in advance to sign up with a partner. Members may choose their own partners or be paired with the assistance of the Committee.

The entry fee is set by the Member Member Committee and the club staff. An awards luncheon follows the shootout.  Prizes are awarded to the Overall Winners and 1st and 2nd place in each flight.

Women’s Member Guest

The Women’s Member Guest is a club-sponsored event.  It is typically played as a 2-Day stroke play event (36 holes).  Club members may bring 1, 2, or 3 guests.  4-person teams must consist of either 2 members and 2 guests or 1 member and 3 guests. Teams are flighted based on combined handicaps and/or the Tees (Red or Green) being played.

The format used for the last several years is a 2-Day Ringer format.  On Day 1, the best Gross and best Net Ball of the 4-some are combined on each hole.  The balls chosen must be from 2 different players.  On Day 2, the objective is to improve the total score (combined Gross and Net balls from 2 different players) on each hole.  If you do not improve the score on Day 2, your Day 1 score stands for that hole.  This allows for faster play on Day 2 since you can pick up and move on if it is obvious that you will not improve your score for a given hole.

There is a pairings party and an optional “fun event” the night before play begins. Typically, the first day of play is an afternoon shotgun start, with dinner and entertainment to follow. Day 2 is a morning shotgun. There will be an awards luncheon following the completion of golf on Day 2. Prizes will be awarded to 1st and 2nd place in each flight. All Players will receive a “Tee Gift” and a team photo.

Grand Haven Cup

The Grand Haven Cup is a Club-sponsored 36-hole event played over 2 days, using 4 different 9-hole formats.  There are Women’s and Men’s Divisions, and the Divisions are flighted based on combined handicaps of each team and/or the tees being played.  If there are an insufficient number of teams, all teams will compete in 1 Flight.  Women may select to play from the Red or Green tees.  Typical formats include Better Ball of Partners, Scramble, Modified Alternate Shot and Aggregate (both scores of each player are combined for the 9 holes).  Prizes are awarded to the Low Gross and Low Net teams in each flight.  Handicap strokes are given based on USGA recommendations for each format for Net purposes.

Gross and Net Flight winners will compete against one another for the Overall Grand Haven Cup Champions.  An Awards Luncheon will take place following the Flight playoffs.
